Венеційський карнавал – яскраве й видовищне дійство, яке дивує людство своєю вишуканістю й загадковістю ось уже як 900 років. Певним чином він нагадує наше життя – ніколи не знаєш, хто може бути поряд із тобою за тією чи іншою маскою.

Цього року Венеційський карнавал в італійському місті Венеція проходив із 31 січня по 17 лютого. Яскраве вбрання минулих епох, загадкові маски, елегантні поклони, музика, веселощі… Здається, час тут зупинився й пішов у зворотній бік. У ті епохи, коли очі розбігались від краси, таємничості й вишуканості.

І недаремно так здається, адже витоки карнавалу – в давньоримських язичницьких святкуваннях на честь римського бога Сатурна, бога часу, хліборобства та рільництва. Ці святкування колись у древні часи називались сатурналії, і тоді можна було робити що завгодно й де завгодно, бо можна було сховатися за маскою.

Далі церква прив’язала цей карнавал із підготовкою до великого посту напередодні Великодня, який наступає після святкувань, навіть саме слово «карнавал» (carne vale) в перекладі з італійської означає: «прощавай, м’ясо».

Змінювались епохи, люди, звички, побут, одяг. Змінювалось усе, але залишався Венеційський карнавал з персонажами в особливих венеційських масках. Ці маски, до речі, так колись полюбили венеційці, що хотіли їх носити навіть в будні, але влада це жорстко забороняла аж до ув’язнень чи покарань різками.

Зараз Венеційський карнавал нагадує величезну театральну сцену, де до кінця неясно, хто актор, а хто – глядач.

Тут кожен також може відчути себе селебриті. Вдягаєш костюм, маску – і за тобою бігає ціла зграя папараці.

Тільки чайки байдужі до цього строкатого розмаїття. Вони чекають на простакуватих туристів зі снеками.

А коли відшумить це дійство і тисячі туристів роз’їдуться в різні боки земної кулі, смарагдові Венеційські канали чекатимуть нових відвідувачів в новому році на це незабутнє карнавальне свято життя.

Where masks rule the ball

The Venetian Carnival is a bright and spectacular celebration that has amazed humanity with its elegance and mystery for nearly 900 years. In a way, it resembles our own lives — you never know who might be standing next to you behind one mask or another.

This year, the Venetian Carnival in the Italian city of Venice took place from January 31 to February 17. Colorful costumes from past eras, mysterious masks, elegant bows, music, and celebration everywhere… It feels as if time has stopped here and begun to move backwards — to those ages when beauty, mystery, and refinement dazzled the eye.

And this impression is no coincidence, as the origins of the carnival lie in ancient Roman pagan festivities held in honor of Saturn, the Roman god of time, agriculture, and farming. In ancient times, these celebrations were called Saturnalia, when people were allowed to do anything, anywhere, because they could hide behind a mask.

Later, the Church connected the carnival with preparation for Lent before Easter, which follows the celebrations. Even the word carnival (carne vale) translated from Italian means “farewell to meat.”

Epochs changed, as did people, habits, lifestyles, and clothing. Everything changed, yet the Venetian Carnival remained, along with its characters wearing distinctive Venetian masks. By the way, Venetians once became so fond of these masks that they wanted to wear them even on ordinary days, but the authorities strictly forbade it, imposing punishments that could include imprisonment or flogging.

Today, the Venetian Carnival resembles a huge theatrical stage where it is never entirely clear who is an actor and who is a spectator.

Here, anyone can feel like a celebrity. Put on a costume and a mask — and suddenly a whole crowd of paparazzi is chasing after you.

Only the seagulls remain indifferent to this colorful spectacle. They simply wait for naïve tourists carrying snacks.

And when the celebration fades away and thousands of tourists scatter across the globe, the emerald Venetian canals will wait for new visitors next year, ready once again to host this unforgettable carnival of life.
