Колупання печі – це не колупання в носі. Це важлива українська обрядова традиція, якою супроводжувалось сватання, а, отже, перший і знаковий крок до створення нової сім’ї та продовження роду.

Як усе зазвичай відбувалось? Щойно свати до хати й розпочинали свою традиційну оповідку про куницю та дівицю, дівчина мала зайняти позицію біля печі й картинно, щоб сватам було видно, колупати її, опустивши при цьому очі.

Для чого? Щоб продемонструвати, що вона зніяковіла. І що здивована, що вони тут з’явились. Хоча, можливо, і сто разів про це знала, але традиція була така – мала зніяковіти. Та оскільки кожна наречена могла б ніяковіти по-своєму, що й заплутатись свати у тому могли, тож предки наші й придумали отакий атрибут ніяковіння, як колупання печі.

Деякі етнографи вбачають в оцьому колупанні культ печі, яка була свого роду родинним обрегом, і, колупаючи її, дівчина ніби набиралась її енергії у цей важливий момент. Щоб взяти її з собою в нову господу, і поратися вже біля іншої печі, і годувати свою нову родину.

Якою вже далі була дистанція між зніяковілим колупанням печі та подальшими «руками в боки» – то вже залежало від ситуації та від того, як швидко українська жінка вчилася давати собі раду.

Загалом про колупання української печі багато писали письменники:

«Мені, мабуть, довіку буде сниться, як я стою, не піднімаючи віч. А ті свати лопочуть про куницю, а та дурепа колупає піч» (Ліна Костенко. Маруся Чурай).

«Онисю, ставай колупати піч! Приїхав Моссаковський та ще й з братом, певне, з сватом, — гукнув батько» (Іван Нечуй-Левицький).

Немає зараз отих печей, і ніхто давно вже їх не колупає. Ну то хоч згадаймо про це! Адже ця традиція дуже колоритна й цікава. Від неї брали свій початок справжні історії наших предків.

Why did girls in Ukraine pick at the stove?

Picking at the stove is not the same as picking your nose. It was an important Ukrainian ritual tradition that accompanied matchmaking, the first symbolic step toward creating a new family and continuing the family line.

How did it usually happen? As soon as the matchmakers entered the house and began their traditional story about the marten and the maiden, the girl had to take her place by the stove and, making sure the matchmakers could see her, demonstratively pick at it while keeping her eyes lowered.

Why? To show that she was embarrassed and shy. She had to appear surprised that they had come — even if she had known about it a hundred times before. Tradition required her to be shy. But since every bride might show embarrassment in her own way — which could easily confuse the matchmakers — our ancestors came up with this clear sign of modesty: picking at the stove.

Some ethnographers see in this act a reflection of the cult of the stove, which in Ukrainian homes was a kind of family guardian. By touching or picking at it, the girl was believed to draw strength and energy from it at this important moment — taking that symbolic energy with her to her future household, where she would care for another stove and feed her new family.

How much distance there was between that shy stove-picking and the later “hands-on-hips” confidence of a married woman depended on the situation and on how quickly a Ukrainian woman learned to stand her ground.

Today those traditional stoves are gone, and no one picks at them anymore. But at least let us remember it. This tradition is colorful and fascinating — and from such customs the real stories of our ancestors once began.
